A Closer Look at Glaucoma
What is glaucoma? Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that result in increased pressure within the eyeball, potentially harming the sensitive and vital structures at the back of the eye. These conditions are often progressive, meaning they worsen over time, and can ultimately lead to irreversible vision loss and blindness. Notably, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness globally.
Receiving a diagnosis of glaucoma or learning that you are at risk can be challenging to comprehend. Vision is a crucial sense for most individuals in their daily lives, and the prospect of adapting to life with significant vision impairment can be daunting. However, many types of glaucoma are manageable, particularly when detected early. With appropriate care and management, it is possible to delay or even prevent permanent vision loss
What are the symptoms of glaucoma? In the initial stages, glaucoma often does not present any noticeable symptoms. Consequently, approximately half of the individuals who have glaucoma may be unaware of their condition. Symptoms may only become apparent once the disease has caused irreversible damage.
- Some of the more common glaucoma symptoms include:
- Eye pain or pressure
- Headaches
- Red or bloodshot eyes
- Double vision/ Blurred vision
- Gradually developing blind spots or visual defects like tunnel vision
Certain forms of glaucoma, especially angle closure glaucoma, can lead to abrupt and severe symptoms that require prompt medical intervention to avert permanent vision loss.
